grow up

My heart aches when I hold my kids

It begs them

“Don’t grow up.”

Stay small.

Stay squishy.

Stay here with me a little longer.

Then I remember

The babies at Robb Elementary

Who left this earth far, far too soon

And I think of those parents

Longing for their kids

To be given the chance to grow up.

To stay with them a little longer.

Tonight

As I hold a sleeping baby in my arms

I cling to him

And I beg him:

“Please grow up”.
